Hard at work

And I find myself in a happy place: editing. Editing is what learned first, and possibly what I am still best at. My skill with a camera is catching up, however. And it's catching up fast. But post production is where the art takes on a conceivable form. It just feels great to be making art again. And the realization I had on one of my many walks is that I'm here to make art. I'm in Europe to make art, and a missions organization has asked me to do so.

Though last week i went through a really bad rough patch. It all happened when I finally narrowed down the story to 5 minutes (not a simple task to do from a 25 minute interview). The story was great and had an excellent tone/mood for me to work with. Then suddenly I just feel so isolated and on my own. It was one of those rare moments where I really felt completely uncomfortable with where I was. My outlook wasn't positive.

I informed my boss of what was up. He thinks it might have been something spiritual. That I am doing something that is getting some rather unwanted attention. And that might be true. Feeling alone and isolated might just be the worst I can feel right now.

Of course, I feel much better. Went to church Sunday (i attended a scottish church here in Brussels) and went to there welcome lunch. Free food AND Scottish accents? YES PLEASE. I got to know a few of the elders and several other folks both new and regular in the church. And the elderly members love me. It was a blessing to be so welcomed by them all. Something that just seems uncommon for me.

My boss has also helped by getting me in contact with some people he knows here in Brussels. He said that unfortunately most of the people he knows live outside of the city. But every little bit helps and has helped so far.

But today, I need to take a break and recharge. I've been pushing hard at the editing and have to force myself to step back. I unplugged and put away my hard drive to do so. This is the most difficult thing for me to do when editing: stop. I'll need my energy for Friday when i walk to the Downtown area. I have a few photography assignments now that my boss discovered my street photography (and apparently was very impressed). Artistic shots of old churches is one of the assignments. I look forward to it!
